A Satyr and Two Maenads Removing a Splinter, Claudius Carl Gustav Klingstedt, 1713, Gouache on ivory
I love the fact that one of the satyrs is wearing spectacles and that two of the figures are looking straight at us. The fourth wall is broken creating an alarming composition that invites us to spy on an intimate moment. There is a rapport between these four nude characters. The maenad rests her arm on her injured lover. Just moments before the thorn spoiled the fun, the viewer can imagine these four romping through the wood and carousing. The small satyr who looks at us is holding the reveler’s leg up in a way which hints at sexual intimacy. These four are not first time lovers.
I adore this piece.
